Martin Lampe of Würzburg was one of the first people to show up at Kant's house. He was a soldier in the Prussian army, and after his retirement took a job as a philosopher's assistant. At first, Kant cherished the conscientious Lampe. But from year to year, the relationship between the scientist and his servants was in flux. Lampe indulged in bad habits, often quarrelled with the housekeeper and kept asking to get paid more. All this led the philosopher to part ways with Lampe after 40 years of Lampe's service to Kant.
