For many years, the painting was in the hands of a family from Insterburg. Prosecutor Berzio was the last owner.
From 1937 to 1944, the portrait was kept in the Historical Museum. However, during the hasty evacuation, the picture was hidden in the notebook of the museum's director, who visited many German regions: Silesia, Mecklenburg and Holstein. After the war, the portrait was given to the Friends of Kant Society in Göttingen and exhibited in the office of the Rector of the University of Göttingen. The painting hangs at the Georg-August University to this day.
So the portrait of Kant by Becker travelled around the world much more than Kant himself.
