In 1753, Kant worked as a tutor for the family of Count Keyserling. There he not only had access to his employers' extensive library, but also entered high society and learned manners.
Countess Caroline Charlotte Amalie von Keyserling was his guide into the world of the local elite. The friendship between Kant and the Countess lasted until her death. In «Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View», the philosopher characterized Countess Keyserling as «the ornament of her sex».
